Roots Rocker Susan Cowsill Kicks Off The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival
New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) March 30, 2008 -- Popular roots rocker, OffBeat Magazine's best female vocalist, and former Continental Drifter Susan Cowsill opens The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (Jazz Fest) on April 25 at 11:15 a.m. on the Main Acura Stage. Cowsill's show will prime the pump and set the tone for a full day of classic Americana roots music. Kim Carson, electric fiddle virtuoso Theresa Andersson, former Led Zeppelin member Robert Plant's duet with Alison Krauss, and Sheryl Crow will follow Cowsill's set.
Cowsill has long been a New Orleans and national favorite, with a rock pedigree that heralds back to the late sixties. She made her initial mark on popular culture at the tender age of eight with The Cowsills, the 60s family pop group that not only scored Top Ten singles The Rain the Park and Other Things, Hair, and We Can Fly but also served as the real-life inspiration for TV's fictional Partridge Family. During Susan's decade with New Orleans' roots-pop super group The Continental Drifters, she won the hearts of discerning listeners with her impassioned vocals and personally charged songwriting, gracing three widely acclaimed albums and a decade's worth of riveting performances.
OffBeat Magazine named Susan Cowsill Best Female Vocalist and the Susan Cowsill Band was named Best Roots/Rock/Country Band at the OffBeat Music Awards in New Orleans, LA, January 2008. Wet Bank Guide (September 2007) called Susan Cowsill's Katrina song, Crescent City Snow, "arguably the best of the lot. It is the anthem we have all been waiting for. "
More recently, editor Fred Mills of Harp Magazine wrote about Susan's performance at South By Southwest in Austin, at the Central Presbyterian Church. "Cowsill's music and larger-than-life vocals filled this sacred space, echoing off the cascading walls. From her Continental Drifters nugget "The Rain Song" to her more recently-penned tribute to New Orleans, "Crescent City Snow," it was about the purest pop I heard my entire trip."
Susan Cowsill has a full summer touring schedule and will headline a fundraiser for Women Against Military Madness (WAMM) at the Minnesota Music Café on July 6. From 5 to 7 p.m. WAMM is a non-violent feminist organization that works in solidarity with other groups to create a system of social equality, self-determination, and justice through the education and empowerment of women. WAMM's mission is to dismantle systems of militarism and global oppression.
